Mountain Bikes below PS500
What to look out for on the best mountain bikes under PS500 : Avoid full-suspension at all cost. Avoid supermarket bikes. These bikes will be too heavy, flexy and brittle with low damping. There won’t be any after-sales support or spares in case something goes wrong. Consider aluminium frames instead of steel or chromemoly. If you can, use hydraulic disc brakes. Modern trail bikes should be more modern than twitchy, steep XC angles. Air-sprung suspension forks make it easier to set the bike up to your body weight. Shimano, SRAM or similar drivetrains with one chainring in the front and a large-range cassette in the back.
Pinnacle Kapur 2 Review – Pinnacle Kapur is an affordable, classic hardtail. The frame of the Pinnacle Kapur 2 gives it a smooth ride and provides a lot of support. The finishing kit is perfectly fine but it’s the bike’s overall geometry and stance that marks it out as a great choice in the sub-PS500 bracket.
Mountain bikes below PS750
Here are some things to watch out for when looking at the best mountain bike under PS750. You’ll want better quality tires (folding Kevlar Beads, well treaded), an air-sprung fork and gears that offer a greater range. For more details on our selection of the top hardtail mountain bikes, read our Buyer’s Guide.
Voodoo Bizango review – The alloy Bizango simple has no competition. The price is unbeatable. We would choose this bike over other decent PS1000 mountain bikes if we had the option (saving some components for future seasons). A good bike with decent brakes and quality gearing. Many bikes are twice as good.
Mountain Bikes Under PS1000
You should look for a mountain bike that weighs less than 14kg. It is difficult to find weights listed for these bikes nowadays. The main focus is on improving the overall bike specification, as with the PS750 must-haves. These features include bolt-thru axles and dropper seatposts.
Vitus Sentier VR review – Vitus is a popular brand that has established itself as an industry leader in direct selling mountain bikes. These machines are tough and affordable. The Sentier is classic Vitus: light, versatile and fast with a spec choice that clearly shows a company run by genuine mountain bike enthusiasts.
Also, is worth considering.
Mountain Bikes Under PS2000
What to look out for on the best mountain bikes under PS2000 : Should have all of the stuff mentioned for the PS1000 bikes above, plus… A select handful of full-suspension bikes are decent options at this price point. BUT, a hardtail is going to be lighter and significantly better specced. You should consider a fat-tyre trail bike with 2.6in+ tires. A single chainring drivetrain is best, at least 11-speed. The suspension fork should have more adjustment options and tuning (volume spacers) These seatposts have dropper options. You can split hardtails by riding discipline (XC Trail Enduro, Trail Enduro), so pick your weapon carefully. SRAM NX or Shimano SLX drivetrain (or better). Stubby stem. Wide handlebars.
Marin Rift Zone 29 1 review – Like any good bike at any price point The Rift Zone is a winning choice because of good angles and attitude. It’s not an underpowered tank, but it can deliver what it promises. Nor is it a skittish or sketchy experience it gets pressed into service on some proper terrain. It does not come with a dropper saddlepost, so negotiate a bargain at the bike shop or set aside some cash to purchase one.
Another option worth considering is
Mountain Bikes below PS3000
Here are some things to keep an eye on when buying the best mountain bike under PS3000. Cross-country runners who are more concerned about weight will be better off with a hardtail. However, everyone else should have full-suspension. The main entry point for carbon in the market is direct-sales. A dropper seatpost must be included. A suspension fork and a rear shock are required with compression damping adjustment. You can choose from three riding styles for full-suspension bikes: XC, Trail and Enduro. Some drivetrain parts from SRAM GX or Shimano XT (or better).
Nukeproof Reactor290 Comp Alloy review. After much debate among MTB enthusiasts, the MTB industry has finally agreed on what constitutes an modern trail bike. It is a mid-travel 29er. With 140/130mm travel the 29er Reactor ticks the basic boxes but it’s much more than that. Nukeproof designers knocked this out of the park as a first generation model. It’s ready to rip staright away. It’s possible to choose the 27.5in Reactor alternative if your leg is not long enough for you to drive 29in wheels.
Cross-Country Bike
Trek X Caliber 9 Trek X-Caliber 9 Review Canyon Lux CF SL 8.0 Pro Race review Canyon Grand Canyon AL SL 7.0 Cross-country – often abbreviated to XC – bikes are all about covering big distances, preferably as fast as possible. This category used to encompass all mountain bikes. However, nowadays it mostly covers bikes that are designed for endurance races.
This is why weight is so important. Bike wheels are narrow, light-tread, and the standard width of the tyres on them is 2.2 inches. A 29-inch wheel is the most common size for cross-country bicycles. This allows riders to easily roll over obstacles.
Even at the highest levels of racing, hardtails are still used thanks to their weight and pedalling efficiency advantages over full suspension machines, though these are becoming more popular. A cross-country bicycle will rarely have more than 120mm suspension travel. However, 80-100mm suspension travel is more common. Often the switch allows the suspension to stop moving with a “lockout” feature. By compressing the suspension while riding hard and out of the saddle, or when going up big climbs, the rider is not wasting any effort.
It is important to keep the rider’s head low in order to allow for effective pedalling. High head angles (rarely more than 69o) and short handlebars pair with long stems. This means they are stable but can quickly change directions.
These handling qualities are what make a trail bike more appealing than a road bike.
Buy this if: If you don’t care about riding technical descents, and want to get as far as possible.
Is Mountain Biking a Good Idea?
Mountain bikes can be more challenging to pedal on the pavement than they are on mountain bikes. These bikes have a more comfortable riding experience, are easy to maneuver on many different surfaces, and offer an upright position. Hybrid or cross bikes are almost as fast and easy to pedal as a road bike, while being almost as comfortable and versatile as a mountain bike.
