Our Top Picks for Battery-Powered Chainsaws

These cordless electric mowers are quiet and fast and can be used to trim and do other chores around the garden.

For quieter, more efficient, and faster yard cleaning, many homeowners have turned to battery-powered chainsaws. The battery-powered saws can be used in a variety of ways, including to cut grass and remove weeds. Most likely, you’re already familiar with a string trimmer. Removing a downed limb or dropping a small tree is as easy as swapping out the battery from another machine and sliding it into the chainsaw, filling its bar oil reservoir, and cutting. The entire operation is clean, quiet, and devoid of hassle. What’s more, professional-level tools compare very favorably with gas-engine saws when it comes to power.

Gas Vs. Cordless

The differences between an electric-motor chainsaw and a gas-engine one are numerous. The former is significantly quieter. Gas-engine chainsaws are loud-about 105 decibels; a cordless chainsaw is roughly equal to a corded electric circular saw, at about 100 decibels. Both tools require hearing protection. The cordless chainsaws weigh the same as or slightly more than their gas-engine counterparts. The weight of a 50-cc gasoline-engine saw with an 18 inch bar weighs around 11-12 pounds. Our cordless saws ranged in weight from about 11 to 14 pounds. Because you don’t need to fuel it, the cordless model may work better for smaller jobs. It’s as easy to charge the battery and get going. The gas-enginesaws on the other hand excel in big tasks: tree or stump removal, firewood and timber harvesting, as well storm cleanup.

Each type of saw requires bar oil and sharp chains. It is important to be able to adjust the length of the chain properly.

How we tested Our test saws were run through approximately 6 inches of wood logs. We charged each saw’s battery, strapped a log onto a saw buck, and proceeded to rapidly and repeatedly cut test discs (or “cookies,” as they are called) by pivoting the saw through the log. It is possible to detect vibration, stabbing, hesitancy or lack of trigger response. To protect the circuitry of the battery and the circuitry, the thermal cutoff threshold on the saw should be low. The heat generated by rapid repeat cuts in hardwood can be very high, due to both current flow and the chain drive. A few saws could be used for cutting down storm-damaged trees. These saws will have the disc count N/A. For now, it is a reality that supply chain issues can occur. There is a possibility that the saws we reviewed may no longer be available. Here are three additional saws that we tested and passed our tests.

How much Cr is tested on chainsaws

The safety and effectiveness of chainsaws is what we focus on.

We measured the time each saw took to get through oak. Oak is the hardest of woods we will use on our property. Each saw is also evaluated for its handling, including how it can make vertical and horizontal cuts. Also we check for vibration.

For ease of use, we look at a number of factors, including how simple it is to start, adjust, and maintain. Additionally, safety components are sized, kickback is checked, as well as whether the exhaust part of a vehicle, such the muffler or engine, gets too hot. This can pose a potential burn hazard.

Recent additions to our ratings of predicted reliability and owner satisfaction reflect more than 11,000 CR member’s experiences with 13,000+ chainsaws bought new between 2010-2025. This will include whether the chainsaws were ever damaged or stopped working within five years. Also, it will indicate the number of members that are most likely to recommend the chainsaw to friends and family.

Packaging:

WORX’s chainsaw was packaged in a rectangular cardboard box. There were lots of graphics outside that showed exactly what it contained. You will find the following: the cordless saw, the 20V (2.0Ah) lithium battery, the battery charger, the extension pole, and instructions for using the battery charger.

The bar and chain oils are not included. Not sure what that is or why you need it for a cordless chainsaw?

Although the saw was not stored in an additional cardboard box, it passed without any dents or scratches. The original shipping box survived intact.
