In-Depth Product Review: Cristel Casteline Frying Pan Skillet Or Paella Pan

Cristel Casteline 32cm fry pan skillet

Japy suffered from the Great Depression of 1920s and World Wars II, which led to numerous divestitures of the assets and organizational restructurings. There were several pieces to be taken over by lenders and banks, which led to the bankruptcy of the last Japy firms in the 1980s. The Fesches-le-Chatel factory shut down in 1981. Some former factory workers illegally restarted production in 1983 and eventually won the legal right to restart the factory as a workers cooperative company. Cristel was the name of the company, which is a combination of Cristal Champagne’s location and Fesches-le-Chatel’s factory.

Because the cooperative was struggling with old machinery and lack funding, Bernadette Diddane, an accountant and consultant freelancer, was hired to help them save their business. Her husband Paul Dodane, then an engineer at Peugeot, became interested over time in helping his wife’s project. His spare time was spent designing “Cook and Serve,” cookware with removable handles that could also double as servingware. 1986 saw the debut of the “Cook and Serve” concept. It was so popular that the Dodanes took control of the workers cooperative and made it a French version.

Cristel became financially successful and exported its products. This was especially true in Japan where small living spaces meant that detachable handles, which are space-saving, were highly appreciated. Cristel was first introduced to the U.S. in 2014.

The handles appear as shown in the photos (these photos do not scale, and the long handle will be larger in real life).

Cristel Casteline is a product line that uses thin tri-ply cladded stainless-aluminum-stainless vessel bonded on top of a thin aluminum disc, which in turn is bonded to a bottom cap of magnetic stainless steel. The hybrid clad+disc design is meant to provide heat distribution and heat transfer that’s unparalleled in aluminum discs. However, PTFE (commonly called Teflon), can wear off and be less resistant to impacts and wear than 18/10 stainless steel. Cristel’s prices for nonstick parts are too expensive compared to other high performing nonstick options like Anolon Nouvelle Copper.
