Contrary to popular belief, the Eero latest mesh kit was built using small and inexpensive devices. It does however lack the Orbi Voice Nest Wifi’s microphone and speaker. This Eero review of the mesh kit has no changes from February 2020.

Since this router was the sequel to one the best mesh Wi Fi systems available, we have been anxiously awaiting the Amazon-owned Eero to deliver. The results, however, are mixed. This router doesn’t have the same range or performance as its predecessor, but it does come with Secure+ protection which costs $100 more per year. It’s still the best deal in mesh networking, even though it comes with a 3-pack.

Eero, which was purchased last year by Amazon, has been busy. Eero is a company that has developed a smaller mesh networking system than what you would expect. The price for this three-pack of Eero devices, $249 each, is $150 lower than its predecessor. It is a tiny device measuring 3.9 inches by 2.4 inches and is much smaller than Google’s Nest Wifi products. This means that it can be concealed (like on a bookcase) while being discreet enough to sit on top of a coffee table.

Eero Home WiFi System 2 is easier to set-up than its predecessor. Beacons are wireless access point that plug into AC outlets. It’s also more powerful, thanks to a new Qualcomm mesh Wi-Fi router chipset and a tri-band Wi-Fi radio. Eero claims that the kit, which costs $399, is appropriate for three to four bedrooms. I also agree with him. The router was capable of delivering triple-digit throughput in each room, giving me more bandwidth than I need to simultaneously stream HD video from multiple sources.

But when you look at the benchmark charts below, you’ll see that while the new Eero (I’ll call it Eero 2 from here) is much faster than the first-generation product, it was the fastest mesh router in the field of eight that I’ve tested to date in only one location in my home, and that was with a MacBook Pro as the client. That location happened to be my home theater. This is because most wireless devices are unable to penetrate the walls or ceilings of this space due the numerous layers of drywall and the thickness of the walls.

The Eero 2 was second in home theatre when the client had an HP Envy with Windows 10. Eero 2 came in the middle for most other areas. Eero 2 was more efficient than the original product in almost every area, except the bedroom. Clients can use either a Windows or Mac computer client.

The Eero 2’s performance can be represented by the lighter olive-green line. Netgear’s router-plus-satellite Orbi wasn’t always the fastest, but it was always much faster than the Eero 2.

Eero’s Beacon is a backward-compatible router that is compatible with Eero’s first generation. The first time we saw the Beacon was with Ubiquiti Labs AmplifiHD. Netgear now has an Orbi model, which includes a plug-in satellite. I have one in my queue for review. Eero’s is by far the smallest and the most attractive, and it has a unique and very thoughtful feature: an integrated LED nightlight.
