It is slightly different to purchase a Mozilla VPN membership than for other VPNs. Even if you aren’t planning on using Firefox, you will still need to create a Firefox account. Mullvad, winner of Editors Choice for IVPN do not require personal data and instead use random numbers to identify accounts. You can also purchase a subscription anonymously with money sent directly to their respective HQs. Mozilla VPN is limited to only major credit cards. Mozilla also does not support payments made via cryptocurrency.

A Mozilla VPN subscription lets you use up to five devices simultaneously. That’s the average across the services we’ve reviewed, but a growing number of services are doing away with this limitation entirely. Avira Phantom VPN, Encrypt.me VPN, Ghostery Midnight, IPVanish VPN, Editors’ Choice winner Surfshark VPN , and Windscribe VPN place no limit on the number of simultaneous connections.

Given the close association of Mozilla VPN with Mullvad VPN (VPN), it shouldn’t surprise that there are very few other features. Mozilla VPN doesn’t provide push-button accessibility to Tor Anonymization Network. Accessing Tor via a VPN is not necessary, although it is convenient. Mozilla VPN doesn’t support multi-hop VPN connections. These VPN servers route web traffic to another VPN server, in order to protect your information.

Mozilla VPN offers split tunneling for both Android and Windows. You can choose which apps will send traffic over the VPN and which won’t. It is ideal for stream media and games, as well as high-bandwidth but low security activities. Notably, Editors’ Choice winners Nord. VPN and Proton. VPN and Proton were the only VPNs reviewed by us that provide multi-hop split tunneling as well access to Tor.

Mozilla added split tunneling as a feature. It detects when your network attempts to load the captive portal login screen. It is very simple and built around a gray window. Bold accent colors are similar to Firefox’s existing design. We dig the bold pinks, purples, and oranges, which give the app a lot of visual sizzle in the same-y world of VPN apps. The app’s interface is vastly improved over Mullvad VPN’s cramped desktop application. That said, Tunnel. Bear’s friendly interface, bold yellows (and friendly bears) still holds the market share.

You will be connected to the internet quickly by pressing the button in the middle. When you are connected to the VPN, it transforms into a vibrant purple. The app will display your network activity by clicking on the central card. Although the chart’s usefulness isn’t great, it is pleasing to see.

Clicking Select Location will bring up a selection of servers available. This list is organized according to country. Expand each option to find the locations. A server can only be selected for a certain region. This is a limitation. You can drill down to specific servers with Mullvad VPN.

Mozilla VPN’s split tunneling feature has been available since the time we first reviewed them. Its well executed in the app, with a clean interface where you select which applications should run outside the VPN connection. The feature was tested by disconnecting Chrome from the VPN connection, and we viewed the results.

A quirk of the app is that it shows you all your devices, regardless of whether or not they are connected to Mozilla VPN. Mozilla VPN limits you to a maximum of three simultaneous connections. While this model doesn’t appeal to us, we do like that it allows you to access remote devices and frees up slot space.

Mozilla VPN lacks many additional features. It’s therefore not surprising that there are so few settings. There are two choices: enable IPv6 by default and disable local network access by default. The latter is useful if you want to connect your device to other machines on your network, like a streaming box or a network printer. In our testing, we confirmed that Mozilla VPN changed our public IP address and hid our ISP information.

Although Firefox VPN was previously known under the names Firefox Private Network (or Firefox VPN), it wasn’t available outside of the US. For a time it was in closed beta, but now users flock to this fully-functional VPN.

Mozilla released its Firefox Private Network Add-on late in 2019, and it did confusely share a name. Firefox users can encrypt browser traffic whenever they require extra security, such as when connecting to public Wi-Fi. However, the add-on is currently in beta and only available to US users.

Mozilla VPN-Lite Browser Extension is available as a free download. The extension protects the browser traffic, but makes your entire device vulnerable. This extension may be useful to casual users but it cannot compare with a real VPN.

Mozilla VPN (check our complete review of Mozilla VPN) was also developed. This is a virtual private network that encrypts every bit of traffic on your whole device. This product can be purchased for just $4.99 per year and is fully compatible with Windows, Mac OS Android, i. OS or Linux.

These are the standard supported devices. However, Fire Stick doesn’t have a VPN app. There is also no option for other streaming devices. We aren’t confident that this will be happening anytime soon. However, Mozilla VPN does not appear to fully target streaming. Unfortunately, router support remains a big no-go.

A ‘full-device’ Mozilla VPN has been long-awaited and much anticipated by Firefox devotees, and below you’ll learn how to download the software, what it offers, and how it fares against the biggest names in the VPN game.

Since I started using Mozilla VPN a few months ago, I have had the opportunity to evaluate it against other VPN services and find out what their strengths are. This is a detailed review of Mozilla VPN.

Can Mozilla VPN do it better?

It’s easier to find me by breaking down my thoughts into the sections below.

The Wire. Guard VPN review. Mozilla is an open source company well-known for their Firefox Web browser. This month, its VPN service became generally accessible in the United States. In partnership with Mullvad (a techie-friendly VPN provider), the cross-platform VPN uses Wireguard. Mullvad was to our knowledge the first VPN provider to provide Wireguard support. The service currently offers VPN clients for Windows 10, Android and i. OS, but it is also available to users with other operating systems such as Mac. OS and Linux, are going to have to wait. Mozilla says that support for Mac. OS and Linux are coming soon, but unfortunately, even for advanced users who know Wireguard configurations, it’s not possible to simply roll your own internet connection right now.

This service authenticates using a Firefox cloud account. When you sign up for a Mozilla VPN subscription, you’ll be asked to create a Firefox account if you don’t already have one. Firefox accounts are an SSO (Single Log On) service. They use oauth2 just like Google accounts, but they’re not linked to Google accounts. This means that even though you signed up with a Gmail account tied to an Android phone, it won’t automatically log in.

Mozilla VPN looks like a Mullvad VPN. The client application is different and the billing entity is different. It is a bit less expensive through Mozilla, though Mullvad costs EUR5 per month. At current exchange rates, Mozilla’s offer is $0.80 less per month.

We need to be clear before we continue. As editorial policy Ars Technica has repeatedly stated, Ars Technica does not recommend public VPN providers. While Mozilla does put its own stamp of approval on Mullvad’s policies, we have neither sufficient access nor resources to audit those claims ourselves. Mozilla’s support and partnership will be up to the readers to determine if it provides enough assurances for privacy and security.

Readers who want a publicly available VPN service and a somewhat higher level of potential privacy might consider bypassing Mozilla and going directly to Mullvad. The Mozilla VPN service must be tied to a working email address and paid for with a credit card. Mullvad accounts, on the other hand, have no identifiable information except for their account number. They can also be paid with Bitcoin or literal cash in an envelope mailed to them.

There is no better way for us to ensure Mullvad’s internal policies or handling than Mozilla’s. However, never collecting real-world data from users in the first instance is an excellent start towards privacy.
