In 2003, I purchased a Flow Kooler water pumps for my 4.0. In 2003, they had the imeller pinned to a flat metal plate and it cost $120. The reason I purchased it was that i love to buy new stuff when things break down. The $25 GMB was purchased shortly thereafter to replace the broken water pump on my other jeep. It was identical to the GMB casting when i first looked at it. So all Flow Kooler did was rivet a plate on the impeller and charge an extra $100.
It also has a GMB Water Pump, which is rated poorly because its impeller hits the block. The plate is riveted onto the standard pump and increases coolant flow. Although it was not tested, it seems to be possible. The Flow Kooler (GMB) came with a thick gasket and a regular gasket. In the instructions it said that if the impeller struck the block you could space it further with the thicker gasket, or to use both. The interference was not an issue so I used the standard thin gasket.
The GMB pumps have this weird machined out area where the heater hose pipe comes out that is filled in with a aluminum plate and they are the only ones i see made like that and i have replaced a lot of 4.0/258/2.5 water pumps.

Gates don’t actually make water pumps. Instead, they repackage existing ones and market them as their own. GMB may be a bit expensive, but there are many positive reviews so it’s not a bad thing. Mine is still going 15 years after i installed it so they have to be doing something right. GMB will soon be replacing the water pump in my dodge ram.
The water pump failed on my 89 Comanche 2.5. I took my car to the mom-and-pop parts store. They had a pump on hand, but I don’t remember what brand it was. I brought it home and tried to attach it. However, it had the wrong holes drilled and was set too high to one side. It also hit the block where the inlet was. It was returned and I received another one.
I was at home when my engine started cooling. Then, one day, as I was finishing up something in the garage, I hear water splashing. It was the worst water pump seal I have ever seen. The ground started to gurgle before it stopped. It was obvious that both of the pumps had poor workmanship by just looking at their cast and machine work. Once I had it reassembled, I never experienced another problem.

What is the quality of Gmb-powered water pumps?
Have used GMB water pumps in the past and found them to be high quality replacement pumps. The replacement pump has everything you need. High quality casting and impeller that look identical to the original AISIN brand pump (AISIN is a large OEM parts supplier to the Asian manufacturers).
