Greenworks 40V Chainsaw

GreenWorks says it can cut one cord of wood with the supplied 4.0 Ah 40VG-MAX G-MAX power battery. Based on our tests, I don’t think I’d disagree with this claim. However I will point out that different woods cut faster than others. To end up with run-time, you’re looking at a combination of load and cutting speed. The more load you put on the motor (cutting tougher material or larger diameter pieces) the less run-time you’ll have. Short, quick cuts in softer, dry wood will yield an almost ridiculous number of cuts on a battery-powered tool. Similar to the Greenworks 40V Trimmer (), this tool appears to have plenty of useful run-time.

One big deal about the GreenWorks 40V Chainsaw (model 20312) is that it uses a brushless motor. It’s an electronic commutated system, which means that it doesn’t suffer from the friction of brushes against the rotating motor. Brushless motors operate cooler, are quieter and generate less vibrations than other electronics. And, since there are no brushes, the motor has a longer life as well and virtually no maintenance needs over the lifetime of the tool. This model is huge for chainsaws and represents a major leap in technology.

Another unique feature of the GreenWorks 40V G-MAX Chainsaw is that it uses a 16-inch steel Oregon bar and chain. The best cordless chainsaws that I have used are 14-inch bars. A long bar is one thing but actually being able use it is quite another. In the end, what was most impressive is that we used every inch of the 16” bar, and it held its own quite well during the testing phase of the review.

GreenWorks G-MAX 40V GXX features many safety functions, including a guard for the hand, a clutch, and an easy release trigger. You can also quickly turn the saw off to shut it down completely, just like I said earlier. Also, after inactivity for around a minute, it automatically switches off to stop the battery from draining.

Oiling the saw is automatic (as expected) and facilitated by unscrewing the cap on the left side of the tool and filling it with chain oil (it also has a nice tether attached to the cap so you don’t lose it). The right-hand dials allow you to tension the chain and take it out. It seemed that the chain held tension well, and it was amongst the easiest I’ve ever used.

The Field

There’s not much of a learning curve to operate the GreenWorks 40V chainsaw except that it requires you to engage the handle-mounted electronics system with an On/Off button. This can be used to turn the motor off at any moment. The power button is actually a momentary switch, so the act of activating and deactivating the saw is really handled by the internal electronics which also facilitates the automatic time-out when the saw is inactive. This electric chainsaw is powered by an electrical battery. It only sounds when it pulls the trigger. Let off, and it’s as silent as a hand saw.

This was actually a very fun way to do some cutting. There is a learning curve with most battery-powered chainsaws. However, it becomes almost unbearable when you see how quiet and easy the saw cuts. The most noticeable noise coming from the motor is the whine of the motor and the blade breaking down material. The steel Oregon blade and chain on the G-MAX DigiPro are .043” gauge. The narrow-kerf Micro-Lite system is similar to a miter saw blade. It is made for greater cutting power and less motor strain. This makes a good choice for a saw powered by a lithium battery. This will mean that you’ll need to sharpen less frequently but it is worth the extra run-time. Also, it will be much easier to trim larger diameter material without getting bogged down.

This saw can cut quite a bit of material, and our first encounter with it involved cutting through 10 inch pieces of water-oak from the tree we had just felled. This meant the tree was fresh and moist, and the expectations going in were modest to dubious. Jason, my friend and professional tree cutter who has decades of experience, took the saw to me. I was pleased to let Jason have a look at the saw, though he really wasn’t sure if it was the right tool for what he was doing. When he was done, I could see the raised eyebrows of his face as he sawed through the pieces of 10-inch fresh water oak. Without bogging down, the saw cut through the wood effortlessly and did so quickly. The battery only had one drop after seven huge cuts. I don’t think Jason was ready to trade in his gas powered Stihl models for the cordless, but another friend and colleague of mine, Michael Springer , who (dare I say) “dabbles” in quite a bit of wood-cutting (and who reviewed four other cordless chain saws for us last year) said he almost exclusively uses battery-powered saws when he’s in the air, simply for the convenience and safety they afford. While you are on the lift, starting and stopping a cordless chainsaw is safer than using a gas engine.

Greenworks 40 Volt Chainsaw: Features and Benefits We’ve listed those highlights below with their details and consumer feedback to provide you a detailed overview of this particular model, so you can make a more informed decision.

40 Volt, Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Obviously, the lithium-ion battery system is what makes this such a popular tool. Chainsaw maintenance of electric saws are fairly minimal and include basic cleaning, oiling, and chain tensioning- making them a popular product with homeowners. It is much easier to use a battery powered saw because there is not much preparation required. You can grab your saw and start cutting.

This saw is part of the 40-Volt G-Max series. It has been developed with years of innovation and is a top-rated model. You can get up to 150 complete 4×4-inch cuts from this battery before the need for a recharge. A built-in indicator of battery life lets you know how many hours you have before needing to charge it.

A brushless motor works more precisely and is thus more efficient. It also is quieter, runs longer than a brushed motor, and cools much quicker- making overheating a difficult task. The brushless motor of this model provides 30% more torque and excellent cutting performance. Experienced sawyers prefer to use this model for small jobs, but they also have it on hand for larger jobs.

Electric Push Start Gas engines will require that you prime and choke the engine before starting. Make sure you have the correct mixture of fuel and oil, as well as clean filters and a working sparkplug. This is a simple step that you need to do before starting your saw. To start the saw’s operation, you just need to push the power button.

Is The Greenworks 80V Chainsaw Right For You?

There is a lot of power. Built well. Very easy to use. An excellent chainsaw.

An 80V GreenWorks Chainsaw comes with many features that are superior to others. The 80V GreenWorks Chainsaw is the strongest battery-powered chainsaw currently on the market. It delivers the greatest torque and vibration while making the least noise.

It is extremely well-designed. Just look at it. The chainsaw is solid and heavy. It feels good in your hands due to the excellent use of materials, ergonomic design, and metal wraparound handle. The GreenWorks Chainsaw offers the best of both worlds: the 45cc gas engine and the ease of using a battery. Are you looking for more?

My only real complaint is that it’s expensive once you add up the cost of the chainsaw, battery and charger but if you can afford it, it’s definitely worth it. It’s a great 80V tool that will give you a lot. Chainsaw Journal offers two options – either buy 2 4 Ah batteries, or a gas chainsaw. We have written many customer reviews. The data has been analyzed and we have done a lot research. Our research has included countless reviews from customers and we’ve come up with a consensus that the GreenWorks80V chainsaw is the best.

This is not the most expensive. Although it’s the priciest, it offers the best balance between price, power, utility, reliability, long-term durability, ease of use, safety and quality. It truly is one of the most desirable chainsaws on the market.

I consider this to be my most favorite brand of chainsaw. Truly.

However, most people don’t have the budget to buy the 80V GreenWorks premium chainsaw. So, we’re going to be reviewing the GreenWorks 203112 battery chainsaw. You get a lot of features and power for a price that is lower than $200.

The green movement and chain saws don’t seem to be very closely connected, however there are some companies out there who make it a priority to have their chain saws as green-friendly as possible.

You can use it as a chainsaw, but the cordless 40-volt motor is not as harmful as you might think. Here, we’ll take a look at the DigiPro so you can get a better feel for the thing before you buy.
