“First Impressions” Review – Honma Golf Tr 20 440/460 Driver

It was quite a surprise to me that Honma Golf offered the opportunity to play their products. I spent the entire month researching the names of the participants in the PGA Show. Honma Golf wasn’t on the list. It was Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Resort Lodge that I was most surprised to see their booth in the Demo Day area.

I noticed that the booth was “hopping” at their stand earlier in day. Perhaps this is a sign of the future? Perhaps. Honma Golf turned out to be the final manufacturer with whom I would swing, concluding my Demo Day 2020 experience. This was an amazing day, full of surprise and cool Florida temperatures.

Here is my “First Impressions” Review of the Honma Golf TR20 440 driver.

Photo credit: Honma golf The Set-up Before I go too far, it is important to mention that the Honma TR20 driver has two different head models. One is the smaller footprint and lighter 440 cc heads, while the other is larger and heavier. Justin Rose played Honma in Demo Day earlier this year. He chose to use the 460cc head instead. Demo Day went well with the option of the 460 cc, but I was more successful with the 440cc model. Because the footprint is smaller, it’s more comfortable.

The technology inside the Honma TR20 is described below.

TiCarbon+Fast Frame Technology- A ultra-lightweight frame and body made from carbon fiber with a high CIR titanium allow for greater energy transfer from the swing to a golf ball.

ET40 Carbon Crown- This lightweight carbon was used in sole and crown. It allowed for designers to reduce the TR20’s weight. The lightweight carbon also makes it possible for golfers optimize their speed.

Honma TR20 440 Driver Reviews

Honma worked hard over the years to get into the North American golf market. Their breakthrough came when Justin Rose (then World Number One) joined the Honma team and won his first tournament. Rose is not the biggest name, but the change and win made it a household name and got more people talking about the brand. This is a strange situation, where Rose and Honma split up. To some this might put the brand in jeopardy. Honma released some really exciting products this year. Let’s take a dive into the TR20 440 driver and see if this offering can cause a bit of a spark to get people back to thinking about Honma.

Honma calls the TiCarbon Fast Frame Technology the centerpiece of the tech in TR20 cars. For its construction, the chassis consists of a titanium frame and a carbon body. One of the advantages of this type of design is that it allows engineers to manipulate and hone in on where weight is most efficient in the clubhead. There are also three different weight ports on the sole that would enable fitters and golfers one way to dial in their launch, spin, and shot shape. Out of the box, there are two 3-gram weights and one 9-gram weight.

Once again, Honma has gone with their non-rotating hosel, a feature that the company has used for a decade, although we have not seen it in every North America release. However, we did see the feature on both the TW 747 and TW XP-1 drivers, which was what we reviewed last autumn. For those who might be unfamiliar with this piece of tech, here is a quick breakdown. Each manufacturer offers their version of hosel adjustment. The clubhead must be taken off or loosen quite a lot in order for the golfer to select their preferred setting. Honma’s adjustments don’t take place at the top or bottom of the shaft. A mark at the bottom of the shaft sleeve shows the location where the shaft will need to align when it’s inserted into a clubhead. This is a part that ensures that every swing will be the same regardless of how it’s set up. You will see four settings at the bottom: CL(closed), FL-flat, OP and UP (upright). A rotating ring is featured around the screw with a notch that marks its position. You can point the notch anywhere you want it to be, including between settings. This will show how you adjusted your TR20. This sleeve fits over the torque wheel and will make it easier to change settings. But, in an emergency, you can use a golf shirt. Honma is very particular about shaping golf clubs. Honma’s past drivers have been pleasing to the eye. The TR20 440 is no exception. In a world where 460cc driver heads can look extremely stretched from front to back, it’s refreshing to see a smaller head size with a more traditional look. It also has no markings at the crown. The TR20 is one of the most attractive driver head designs on the market. It has no alignment aid and there are no lines around the borders.

The TR20 stood out on the course in many aspects. Because the sector is producing more carbon fibre drivers every day, the sound of these cars has been a prominent feature. Honma spent a lot of time making this driver look great. She also tuned in the tone to achieve a pleasing mix between carbon and titanium. While some carbon fiber drivers are more dead due to their deeper tone, the TR20 gives off an even cracker off the head that makes them sound powerful.

With the TR20’s 9.-gram weight in its rear, and everything remaining as it is, the TR20 created a neutral flight. However, this was slightly fade biased. That bias seemed to grow as I pushed the weight forward. However changes to my hosel ring helped dial in the perfect ball flight. When comparing numbers recorded on a Foresight GC2, there is enough separation between shots struck with the weight forward vs. back. We saw a difference of just over 500 rpm depending on where the 9-gram weight was placed during our testing. That combined with an extra 1.8MPH of ball speed means that the difference in yardage is nine yards. While it is great to be able tinker with weights and notice actual differences, mileage can vary.

While moving the weight forward helped us gain a little bit of ball speed, reduced spin, and more carry distance, it also made the driver feel more penal on misses. This driver is moderately forgiving, even though it’s not the 460cc head. The heavier weight was placed in the draw position or back. You should not expect this driver to be super-forgiving. By choosing the 440cc head, you will sacrifice some user-friendliness. But that doesn’t mean you can’t play it by somebody with a very low handicap.
