How do I choose the right cable modem?

Channels (Downstream Channels x Upstream Channels)

DOCSIS

Theoretical speed limit (Calculation based upon number of channels)

A modem’s number of channels is equivalent to the number of lanes. More lanes mean that more traffic can be transmitted or received simultaneously. DOCSIS modem standards are available in 3.0 and 3.1, with 3.0 modems capping at 1Gbps and 3.1 modems up to ten times faster at 10Gbps. Both the channel setup and the DOCSIS standard are used to calculate the maximum speed of your modem.

It was named the best cable modem of 2019 by Top Ten Reviews. Wirecutter has rated this modem as the best in 2021. It’s an optimal decision for those who want excellent performance on current Internet standards along with moderate future-proofing. It has a maximum download speed of 1000Mbps and an upload speed at 246Mbps. The network supports both 24 downstream and upstream DOCSIS3.0 channels. For users who plan on switching, the Motorola MB7621 is compatible with a wide range of Internet service providers, including Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1 Cox. There are few better options for flexible and mid-range performers.

Our Pick: Netgear Cm600

Netgear CM600 is a 24×8 DOCSIS.3.0 cable modem which works well with all of the major ISPs. It can be used with Comcast Xfinity speed plans (upto 400 Mbps), Spectrum speeds (upto 300 Mbps), Cox ultimate plan (upto 500 Mbps), Suddenlink speeds (upto 1000 Mbps), Cox, Cox and Suddenlink as well as WOW’s 100 Mbps plans. Although the Netgear CM600 user manual (PDF), claims it is compatible with Optimum services, you will need to call your local Optimum support number before purchasing any modem. It’s also popular with owners.

Amazon has a consistent positive reputation.

The CM600 is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem with 24 downstream channels and eight upstream channels. This is plenty for most Internet plans up to 600 Mbps, and many ISPs require a 24×8 modem for their top non-gigabit plans, such as Spectrum’s 400 Mbps plan or Cox’s Internet Ultimate plan. Although DOCSIS 3.1 began rolling out, the standard is compatible with all DOCSIS3.0 modems.

While the CM600 has solid support from every major ISP right now, double-checking your ISP’s compatibility page before you purchase the modem is still a good idea. Many ISPs keep their modem-compatibility list updated regularly, so they may drop support for modems with very little notice.

There are some flaws, but they don’t make the CM600 a bad modem. However, most modems have a 2-year warranty. Netgear’s one-year warranty doesn’t seem to be that great. Modems have a tendency to heat up. For example, the maximum operating temperatures for the CM600 are 104 degrees Fahrenheit. We still think its popularity and ISP support far outweigh the lackluster guarantee.

Photo taken by Michael Hession. Another highly regarded 24×8 DOCSIS3.0 cablemodem that promises comparable performance on similar speed tiers to the CM600, the Motorola MB7621. It’s cheaper than our pick and offers a longer warranty of two years. This makes it a smart choice if the CM600 is unavailable or if you wish to avoid paying another month’s lease fee.

However, some ISPs aren’t as supportive of the MB7621 (Spectrum is absent and WOW is not). CableLabs certifies that this MB7621 works on these networks. Although it is believed to work, official confirmation has not been made. As with all of our picks, checking in with your ISP’s customer service department for compatibility is a good first step.
