Sarah Ward’s Review of The Moni Yakim Legacy: How to Create Character

0 Flares.0 Flames.Moni Yakim explained in the documentary, “Creating a Person: The Moni Jayim Legacy” about the legendary Julliard professor’s life and achievements. But, it’s not a complete statement about the celebratory film. A lot about Rauzar Alex’s equally insightful, loving tribute falls within the usual biographical documentary mold. These include the archive footage, celebrity testimonials, and candid chats between Yakim Alexander and Mina (a Julliard instructor and fellow performer). But, as always, it surprises because its subject does surprise.

Yakim was able to enjoy the type of attention that actors rarely get, which is why, according to Kevin Kline, his former student, Yakim has been a source both of wisdom and intrigue for Creating a Character. It is obvious that his influence has been felt by his students, which include Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, as well as Anthony Mackie. However, his life rarely follows the planned course. As the sole founding member of Jilliard’s drama program, he remains on-staff. This means that one important aspect of his existence has remained constant for more than fifty years. The ex-Israeli soldier turned-mime, who trained under Marcel Marceau and Etienne Decroux, was then drawn to Stella Adler, who pleaded for her to come to America. There is no standard. His students are told by him that they will never be bored if you do the best possible job. He pushes them in the exact same manner that he pushes himself.

Alexander’s film, while presenting the basic details of his life in a familiar way, tells an amazing story that is never boring. In fact, several chapters from Yakim’s early life in Israel, including his military service and introduction to acting, as well his love of mime and the first few years after he immigrated to the USA, could be used to create separate documentary. Yakim’s story is interwoven with Jilliard lessons, which perceptively allow audiences to look at the minute details of Yakim and translate them to his philosophy on acting and movement.

Honey Boy’s Alma Har’el takes over segments, and Creating a Person adds an additional element. Yakim is now demonstrating his mime. This is a risky choice. But it’s not because Yakim has lost his talent or that his teachings are less important. It allows the main point of the film to truly show himself. When Yakim’s teachings are presented alongside these sequences, viewers feel the impact and weight of Yakim’s performances. Physical expression is paramount, whether Yakim instructs his students to memorize roles in gibberish, to avoid words, or does the exact same thing himself.

Yakim doesn’t follow a strict script as demonstrated in the book Creating A Character. To be honest, Yakim wouldn’t advise anybody to keep to a very simple script. Although the film tells Yakim’s story, it also takes the opportunity to shine the spotlight in an unexpected way. Alexander’s documentary is a nod to Yakim. However, almost all of the time Alexander devotes his attention to Alex Sharp from Julliard’s 2014 graduate class. It follows the progression of their group over four years. He is easily identifiable. His Tony-winning Broadway performance of The Curious Incident Of the Dog in The Night-Time and his roles onscreen in To The Bone as well as How to Talk to Girls At Parties, The Hustle, and The Hustle make him instantly recognisable. A year after his studies were completed, he was awarded the American Theatre’s most prestigious prize. It is now a goal for every aspiring actor and teacher to be able to share his dream with their students. It’s not unexpected, but this is still a powerful story.
