Msi 2020 Brand Report Card

Laptop Mag. (Image Credit: Laptop Mag.) MSI not merely climbed out of the double digits but made it one of the top five best laptop manufacturers. MSI not only increased the quality of its gaming laptops, it also expanded its range and changed the design of its flagship laptops.

MSI’s gaming laptops were a success, including the MSI GT76 Titan, the MSI GS66, Stealth. MSI redesigned them both to look like premium laptops. The other was equipped with the largest TSA-approved battery. While MSI’s tech support could be better and its selection could use more variety, MSI pulled off an excellent showing.

MSI revamps its gaming laptops score from flat 30 to 34 of 40. There is a great selection not just of gaming laptops, but also of workstations.

MSI takes design to the next level: MSI won a couple of extra points for design in this year’s awards. They innovatively placed a 99.9Whr cell in a thin gaming notebook and made a gaudy tank of gaming equipment look elegant.

MSI offers accidental-damage insurance: This is yet another company which provides free accidental-damage insurance.

MSI’s Primary Weaknesses

Support could be improved: Although MSI’s tech assistance has significantly improved since last year, there is still much to do. Numerous paths to solutions we weren’t meant for were suggested, some of which were quite simple.

Msi Prestige 14 evo review: Fast but Flawed

MSI’s Prestige 14 laptop line is traditionally marketed to content creators. It’s a slightly different situation with the Prestige 14 Evo. You can get it for $1,099 less than the Prestige 14 but it does not have the powerful GPU or screen with high resolution that makes it stand out as a content-creation device. The Prestige 14 Evo laptop is a productivity machine that can be used every day, despite its name.

Unfortunately, that makes it a tougher sell. This 14 inch laptop is extremely crowded at this price. There are many machines that can do almost everything at comparable prices. Any laptop that has even one major drawback will struggle to rise to the top. Unfortunately, the Prestige 14 Evo has a number of them.

However, the Prestige is still a great device. The Prestige is one of the few 14-inch laptops you can buy that includes the Core i7-1185G7, Intel’s most powerful chip for ultraportables. The Core i7-1185G7 is the most powerful processor I have ever seen, and this review marks my first exposure to it.

It is the Prestige 14 Evo’s 14-inch Intel notebook that offers the highest performance at the lowest price. But does the 1185G7 offer significantly better performance than other Intel systems, or Apple’s M1 MacBooks, to outweigh shortcomings in the chassis? It is likely that the answer will be “no” for the vast majority of users.

MSI Prestige 14 review

Here it is from the front.

It’s not much different from the Prestige 14 chassis. The Evo is the same lightweight chassis as last year’s Prestige 14. It features a foldable hinge, a fingerprint scanner in the upper-left corner of its touchpad and a good keyboard. The finish I have is carbon gray, but it also has a “rose pink” or “pure white” option. One thing you will notice about the new logo is that it’s now branded. MSI’s famous dragon has been limited to MSI Gaming models. Now, the Prestige uses the same MSI letters from the Summit Series. Also, the ports were rearranged. Two USB-C ports are located on the Evo’s left side, along with a USB A, microSD and a headphone Jack on its right. Last year’s Prestige featured the microSD and additional USB A on the right. The additional USB-A is gone, as well as the USB 2.0 port. It is a sad loss. However it was a decent selection.

Msi Stealth15M Review. Thin isn’t always the winner

MSI’s Stealth 15M gaming notebook is perfect for anyone who wants to keep their gaming secrets. Its striking metal design is complemented by a single-zone RGB backlit keyboard that will reveal what the 15M’s intended purpose. Unless you’re running the simplest tasks on battery saver mode, its fans are almost always audibly whirring, and the whining only gets louder with demanding applications and games. You might not notice it if you wear headphones or a headset most of the time, but others around you probably will.

The laptop can get loud because it’s constantly trying to keep cool and warm. It can heat up more when crammed full of powerful components on a thin laptop, especially while gaming. The aluminum chassis diffuses some heat but can sometimes feel too warm to the touch even though it has many fans.

MSI’s GS66 Stealth takes on Razer’s Blade 15 Advanced. However, the Stealth 15M aims at taking on Razer Blade 15 Base. The 15M is MSI closest to matching Razer’s standards in build quality, design, port selection, and style. The 15M is thinner than the GS66 and has a stronger build. While I did complain about Razer’s unibody design needing some work, Razer’s $1,699 model offers more value. You’ll get more ports (including an HDMI 2.1 port for 4K output at up to 120 frames per second), a larger trackpad, user-upgradeable RAM and storage, and more power allocated to its RTX 3060 than you’ll get in MSI’s similarly priced Stealth 15M. Blade 15 Base has a hefty 2.2 pound and is only a millimeter thicker. These aren’t the only things that would stop me purchasing the Blade 15, Base.

Stealth 15M available in two color options: “carbon gray” and white

The grille is one of the few edgier parts of the design.
