The Marketing Angle

Letter for letter there’s really nothing revolutionary about the G20. According to PING, the G20 features:

The Aerodynamic 460cc Head with Larger Face to Create Forgiveness and Power across All Hitting Surfaces

External weight for high launch and low spin.

It’s fairly standard language for a new driver, and under other circumstances I might have fallen asleep reading it, but, PING has an outstanding track record of actually improving the performance of their drivers with each new release. There’s no paint on PING, and there’s no tinker toy adjustment. They are always focused on helping average golfers perform better. Although it isn’t often visually striking, you won’t find a tool that doesn’t do the job.

What We Did: The six golfers we tested were required to play a sequence of shots using our 3Track Equipped simulators starting at about. Golf Tark’s Indoor Golf in Saratoga Springs was used for testing. Detailed data for each and every shot for which we collected data is now viewable in the interactive portion of this review . This data forms the basis of our final performance rating. A subset of golfers was also able to play the PING Golf G20 Driver as an additional performance tester. They were able to provide feedback on our subjective categories, including looks, feel, sound and perceived distance. This information, which we also collected from our performance testers, is used as the foundation for our total subjective score. Our testing included regular, stiff, and rigid drivers.

Conclusion

The testers we have aren’t really morons. These testers are passionate golfers and get excited about testing a lot of our equipment. It happens, like most everyone else. Whatever the reason, PING G20 did not get the guys excited (although they might have rethought their positions after reviewing their figures). Every golfer uses his personal weighting system to decide what is most important. Many golfers will openly confess that distance is more important than any other aspect (even common sense). Some guys are more concerned about accuracy than others. Others get too wrapped up in labelling and painting schemes that they forget to reach the fairway. Do you think your driver looks good from the woods.

We have a scoring system that is absolute and so I must abide by it. You can get the truthful opinion of someone who has personally tested each driver at My. Golf. Spy over the last 2 seasons; even if it doesn’t have some of the intangible lure of some of the others, the PING G20 is absolutely one of the top 3 drivers we’ve ever tested.

R flex TFC169D shaft. Ping ID8 grip. An external weight optimises the center-of-gravity position for maximum launch and spin. G20’s variable-thickness face produces faster ball speeds, and an increase in MOI to allow for maximum forgiveness. The G20’s 460cc clubhead was made of. Ti 8-1-1 alloy, lighter but lower in density. Ti 8-1-1’s high strength-to-weight ratio allows for additional weight to be strategically placed for increasing the MOI on both the vertical and horizontal axes. Weight savings from varying wall thicknesses in the crown and body are positioned to optimize performance and durability.

Overall: This club head is a great look and has a very nice address.

Cons: Ping still does not offer adjust-ability in their drivers and woods, if you want a highly workable club this may not be the choice for you. The average golfer will need a driver that is 45.75 inches in length.

Bottom Line: I believe this is a solid modern driver. It will appeal to a broad range of players.

Below is a summary of the Ping g20 Driving Features:

The g20 color is a gray reserved with a simple alignment but no extravagant or unusual design elements. The g20 is a gray color with no frills. Boring would be another.

Fair enough, the design of this club isn’t its selling point. The club’s sleek design is not a masterpiece.

This might lead you to want the g20. However, if it doesn’t matter what looks mean, all that matters to you is how the club functions.

Because of the low-density Ti 8-1-1 alloy, club heads have a very high strength-to-weight ratio. High launch and low spin are possible thanks to the variable wall thickness of both the crown and the face. Because of its high balance, you can quickly and easily swing much weight.

You have to look out for the golf ball. This large clubface is sure to send your shots flying down fairway. The external weight in the heel is responsible for this. The ball will fly quickly and easily once it is in your hands.

You can swing freely, but this club is forgiving. The club has a very small loss for off-center hits so expect to make consistent distance gains.

Review: Driver Ping G20

Bubba Watson Ping staff player Bubba Watson was known for his great length from the tee. His driving distance scores are consistently high and he is often at the top of his game in tournament after tournament. He is amazing at driving his Ping driver. It’s amazing to see amateurs drive that long. Ping G20 will drive you long. It is a simple driver, but it’s exciting. Ping doesn’t build drivers that have all the bells and whistles. They don’t paint them crazy colors. Instead, they focus on improving their internal design so they can hit more targets and are longer. G20 doesn’t differ. The G20 is shorter and more straight-cut than the previous Ping drivers.

As always Ping offers the best customization process of any golf company. In all of my reviews about Ping, I’ve praised the process and will keep doing so. The best golfers have the best equipment. Sometimes, you may just be looking for a brand new club. You will see the Ping G20 in most shops with the standard shaft. The Ping TFC169D tour or the standard loft. The Tour is less launch-friendly and has lower torque. Common setup is 45.75 inch swingweight and Pings ID8 grip.

I’ve never been a fan of stock shafts, simply because the “made for the masses” shafts are typically cheap, inconsistent and rarely fit my swing. Given all of Ping’s options for fitting, I was skeptical that I could play the G20 off the rack driver. However, after many rounds of playing with the Ping G20 shaft I realized that I couldn’t get better results or numbers with any other shaft. Straight out of the box, this driver is an absolute cannon. It’s a mid launch shaft that has medium/low spin. It has a crisp, smooth feel.

With a total of 460cc and plenty of length from the front to the back and side-to-side, it is an impressive head. It sits on a square base and features a very deep facial. It’s painted in a charcoal color, has the Ping Half-moon alignment tool and a mostly polished bottom with some red/black paint.

The course is the place where you can “Bubba”. This was my first drive. I hit an absolute bomb right down the middle of the fairway as straight as can be. It rose quickly to a medium/high launch. I just carried it down until the end, when the ball dropped straight down the fairway. The rest of rounds were a repetition of the original drive. It was as consistent and long drive as any driver. It was by far the longest driving experience I had. The combination of my G20 3-wood and this driver was so great that I was capable to play a few par 5s which I have never played before. For other players, it was very long. I was paired up with a high handicapper for one round and he had just bought the Ping G20 driver, similar specs to mine. He struggled with every club except for the driver. He was doing it way beyond his capabilities.

Ping changed a few things to make the G20 club “Bubba”. Ping’s G20 driver offers great sound and accuracy with no frills.
