The G400 Hybrid’s biggest upgrade is the new maraging steel front, according to Ping. This gives the G400 Hybrid both immediate ball speed and feel improvements. Ping says that golfers will be able to launch the ball higher when using the latest hybrid due to new center weight weights. They can also achieve a higher peak trajectory, and better landing angles.

G400 Hybrids offer flexibility to allow players to correctly space their sets with the help of progressive CG location. To minimize left bias, the 2- and 3-hybrids have a lower CG toe, while the 5- and 6-hybrids allow for more forgiveness and help to launch the ball higher.

Ping G400 Hybrid: A Comprehensive Review

Sometimes when there’s not a lot wrong, it doesn’t leave much scope to make things a lot more right. Ping was faced with this challenge after launching their new G400, a continuation of their G hybrid success.

If you’ve had the privilege of reading our review of the fairway woods, you’ll have picked up on our musings that the G400 was more of a consolidator (is that a word?) The G400 was more of a consolidator than a game-changer.

It was a great foundation. But qualified praise nevertheless.

So, what of the hybrid equivalent? What if the G400 raised the bar? Could it put Ping on top for elite hybrids and raise its profile? Below are the fruits of our hard work…

After having tested the G30, G30, and G series lineups, I was excited to get my hands on the 2017 Ping G400. G400’s lineup includes 3 drivers options, including SFT, LST, and standard. It also features fairway metals, cross-overs, and irons. The G400 series does not include proprietary Ping grips. This is something I would like to highlight. Ping clubs have had their own grip design since the very beginning of my knowledge. I was happy to see this change as my Tour Velvet grips were used.

Ping G400 445cc Driver Shaft Alta CB, 59-Gram Flex; Stiff; Loft 9deg Ping packed lots of tech in the G400 driver. However, the largest change was the Club Head. Ping increased the G400’s maximum size to 445cc. Ping also designed the driver with a new sleek shape and multi-material construction. The combination of these features creates reduced drag, improves overall forgiveness, and promotes increased club speeds and distance.

You are probably thinking that all drivers manufacturers use similar claims when releasing new models. But Ping took it one step further and actually proved their claims. According to Ping, the Forged Face driver is 2 mph lighter than the G series. The high-density tungsten rear weight produces the most deep rear CG with a highly-forgiving head. This results in an increase in MOI.

Without a doubt the Ping G400 driver is for players of all skill levels. This driver comes in three versions, so players of all skill levels can choose the one that suits them best.

I have seen many small drivers over the years. The Ping G400, at 445cc, passed my eyes easily. Ping replaced the larger head sizes of modern drivers with more traditional shapes and a deeper profile than in past Ping products. A smaller head can sometimes make clubs feel shorter, but Ping did this right.

G400 comes in a rich, clean and simple color. As always, the G400’s matte black finish is striking and prevents the attention from becoming distracted by the intricate crown design. Ping modified the driver’s acoustics to create a deeper and more muted Tour-inspired sound.
