Ping’s new i.Blade irons received a favorable review. They were described as “intelligent blads” by our review. The iron was made to look and feel just like a real blade, while also offering greater forgiveness.

Ping irons’ i200s have blurred the boundaries between blades and cavity-backs. They are made with the cavity-back-friendly design, yet still offer the workability and clean appearance you would expect from compact irons. Ping predicts that between 20% and 40% of its staff will play the i200s this year, with Brooke Henderson and Lee Westwood among them. They will also be available as part a combo set for many Tour players.

Phoenix-based Company also offers a couple of tricks with this release. This includes a secret menu option that will give those in need an extra boost.

Ping’s i200 Irons (PW-9, PW-UW) can be pre-ordered today. They will retail for $135 for steel shafts and $150 for graphite shafts. Here are 10 things you need to know about them.

What is the point of an iron designed for forgiveness if it can be used? Isn’t it impossible to both produce more side spin AND eliminate side spin at the same time? Well, not exactly. Marty Jertson, Senior Design Engineer at Ping explains:

It’s difficult to believe that the set of i200 irons is designed to be forgiving. It has very minimal offset, with the exception of the 3 and 4-irons, which have very few offsets, its top and sole lines being thin. There is no “i200 badging” in their cavities.

My primary curiosity, as someone gaming the PING i. Blades, was how different the two sets look. It’s easy to identify which set is which when you place them side by side (see the slideshow at the end of this review for comparison photos). But, even with them, it was difficult to determine if the i200 or my i.Blade in my hands. However, the 4I does not have as much offset as the i. Blade. That is great news for 99.9999%.

i is for everyone OK. I’m sorry, my spelling mistakes aren’t correct, but I was impressed by the new i200 irons and how they can be a good fit for so many golfers. I like to play 5 rounds on a club and write about it. I tried out some new irons this time and was able to add some round with some golfers who had different handicaps. I get more visitors to AZ since moving here, especially during the spring. Because they were eager to experience these irons on their round, I thought it would be a good idea for me to review their results. I discovered that irons made by Ping are available for everybody.

Ping’s new name, i-20, Girons and Gmax is confusing. The i-blades are great for players and the Girons for game improvement. They are a replacement for the i200s. They bridge the gap between G-irons or i-blades. I think they fit an incredibly wide range of handicaps. They’re attractive regardless of handicap because they have a better look and offer more distance.

The look of ping irons has always been distinctive. However, most recent designs have kept them classic yet modern. These i200s with the simple cavity, i200 bagged and hydropearl finishes look amazing in the bag. While they look compact when placed behind the ball, it doesn’t make them too hard to hit. I found they appeal to a single digit handicap as well as high double digit handicap golfers. Performance is another.

For my AZ game, the Ping i200s irons worked well. I do not have the same handicap as when coaching high school golf. However, I haven’t been practicing as much. They offer greater forgiveness and provide a more straight/higher flight ball than the i-blades. While I still gravitate toward having the i-blades in my bag, it is hard to deny the benefits of the i200s in my bag. The real deal with these irons came when I let my visiting golfers play them. Their ability to hit them and their forgiveness for any non-game enhancement irons was amazing. These guys are typically accustomed to using GI irons but these irons may have persuaded them to change to Ping i200.

These irons, made of Ping i200 steel, perform extremely well at the fairway. They are large enough to be easy to hit and the offset is sufficient. These irons, despite their short faces, are quite long and have good stopping power. This makes long par-3s very easy with them in play. The mid irons were quite accurate, hitting at a good distance. Although the winds blew, they did not move and lost much carry. The short irons are very precise, especially the distance was right on target so that the progression was very natural all the way through the entire set. Gapping iron to iron was something I enjoyed. Ping i200s are very responsive at impact. Ping improves this quality with each successive generation of iron. These irons are sturdy and feel great when you hit the ground. You can feel the difference even though you are not at center.

Because the face is 30% smaller, more weight is placed in the heel and toe to increase MOI by 7 percent. Higher leading edges and more bounce mean better turf interaction. What is the average score for Questions Handicap?

My current handicap index, which is trending down according to the NCGA, stands at 6.2. My handicap index fluctuated between aEURoe0aEUR in 1998-2001, and I spent a lot time away. Now, I am working towards getting back to it!

Are you able to capitalize on your strengths in the game?

I am a skilled ball striker. From green to tee, I’m able to hang out with anyone. The ball is compressed a lot and I believe I can aEURoework it. This may not be obvious to either my watching partners or observers.

Weakness of your game?

How do the clubs speak to me? The clubs are a reflection of two aspects about me as a golfer. Performance is what drives me to play the Hogans. They are well-suited for my style and can swing very well. They were recommended to me by pros. I was smitten immediately. I felt confident and hit them extremely well from the start. While I believed they would allow me to be imperfect, I also trusted that my shots were still possible. If I get the shot just right, I’m capable of doing it.

The other reason I picked up the Hogans was the look. They have the classic look of a blade from the 60’s. They look beautiful. The romantic and aesthetic-minded golfer in my heart fell for them like a million bricks. Yes, I am a sucker for pretty clubs. Would I play beautiful clubs that don’t work for me? However, it is not something that I will do but would consider.

I think I’m similar to a lot of golfers in that I’m always chasing a better game. My swing, equipment, and strategy are all things I like to tweak. Hogans provided the right mix of serious, yet forgiving clubs. It was easy to let go and concentrate on the swing with them.

It is important to mention, however that my irons are by far the most powerful part of my game. I’ve always hit them, high, long and with a lot of spin. Cast clubs have never appealed to me, perhaps because I am a good irons player. Cast clubs just feel stiff to me. I find them hard to reach. Perhaps it’s ego. We think of cast irons primarily as part of an inferior player’s gear. The fact that cast irons can be so bulky and heavy is another reason I tend to disregard them. They always seem to have plastic stickers of some sort with neon colors and faux graphite. Cast, to me is indicative of a poor product.

Accuracy at the Range aEUR A shot that is aimed at the right spot will reach its destination and continue to travel the same distance. Highly reproducible shots.

Distance aEUR Trackman sessions showed a marked decrease in distance, although it is possible that there are some compensating factors. The overall club length was 1/2 to one less than my Hogans.
