Taylormade Spider X Putter Review

If you are familiar with TaylorMade, the Spider head is one that will be remembered by putters and golfers alike. Since its inception many years back, the Spider has enjoyed a steady stream of success. The company sought new construction methods to increase the benefit to the putter’s stroke. Spider X. Welcome to Spider X. Josh (aka JB) on THP Forum introduced Spider X on January 2nd. There was some great feedback from TaylorMade. Spider X has weights that still conform to the standard shape of the Spider, but with a more streamlined profile. This helps keep the eyes from wandering. The preview article suggested that custom weights will be available, ranging between 2-12 grams. This allows golfers to optimize their overall weight. Effectively, this weighting system has managed to maintain extended perimeter weighting without being an eyesore.

To see the sole of your head, rotate the putter and you’ll probably notice carbon fiber in the middle mass. Spider X was focused on maximizing stability and general MOI by putting extra weight around the perimeter. With their first carbon compositesole (on a pletter), they were able to do this. Further, the frames on each side of the heel or the toe have been carved out. The appearance and stability of the head is not compromised, yet the weight benefits are elevated to new heights. The stock head weighs 355g. If you take 15 grams of carbon composite and place it in the center sole, then you’re really maximising the perimeter weight.

The final highlight of what we cannot really see, yet can very clearly hear, is the improvements made to the pure roll insert. TaylorMade has added a thicker surlyn insert in place of pure roll technology. This insert is a long-standing success. This maximizes the soft audible feedback golfers hear when they strike the ball. The insert responds very well in tests. These grooves are similar to other pure roll experiences that we’ve had, allowing for the ball to move quickly and precisely towards the target.

The new TaylorMade alignment system is positioned above the ball so that the eyeballs naturally focus on it. The extensive studies resulted in a design that helps golfers visualize the line they are trying to putt the ball towards, which inevitably adds to both consistency and confidence in overall direction. As the picture will clearly show, the ball looks extremely comfortable in front of the head. While it may not be obvious, but still very relevant, true path alignment is actually indented directly into the head. It isn’t just painted on. This design supports the connectivity of the topline with a special depth.

TaylorMade is taking a completely different approach in 2019, with Spider X. The putter line-up now includes two prominent colors, copper and navy. You can choose to have the true path alignment in all or part of the white center, or you could just leave it in the white. THP would love to know your preferred color between these two heads. However, both of them have a certain classiness that is perfectly in line with their design. A sleek, minimalist design with a single-bend shaft (all black) and a slant neck. Stroke Pistol GTR 1.0.
