Sometimes it is also called “304” or “316” stainless. Another term is 304, which refers to either 18/10 or 8 stainless. They both make wonderful pots.

316 stainless steel is a marine grade of 300 Series stainless which contains molybdenum and is even more corrosion resistant than 304 stainless (and also more expensive). A 316 stainless steel is available for cooking, which contains titanium. It’s called 316Ti.

All 300 Series stainless metal is strong and resistant. 300 Series stainless is best for cooking. There are many options for 300 Series stainless. However, the price and endurance of these cookware items will be affected by their quality.

400 Series stainless: 400Series is Ferritic stainless. Magnetic. You may also call it 18/0 for the chromium/nickel structure (i.e. that it doesn’t contain any nickel). 400 Series stainless is typically used on the exterior of clad stainless cookware to make it induction compatible.
