Wilson D9 Driver Review
How does it all work?
If you’ve read our D9 iron review , you’ll know all about the new generative design process that Wilson are using, with computer modelling software running through lots of different design variations to find the one which produces the most effective results.
The driver features a peak kinetic response club face (PKR), which Wilson says is the most technologically advanced that they have produced. The face is divided into different fractural areas so each area can be tuned to deliver optimal distance and performance, even if it’s not in your middle.
The three-layer composite crown is designed to neutralise vibration and save weight, keeping the centre of gravity lower in the head to promote an easy, improved ball flight.
You can choose from either 10 gram or three gram weight options for the back part of the clubhead. They are useful in fine tuning ball flight and forgiveness.
The driver is complete with a premium Mistubishi Tensei CK Blue shaft and Lamkin grip. As it is a fixed head with no adjustability, there are three different lofts available: 9, 10.5 and 13 degrees. All of these lofts are available at a price of $99. PS299. Very reasonable, and quite refreshing.

Wilson D9 Driver Verdict
Earlier in this review I included a quote from Wilson’s Jon Pergande where he claimed that the D9 was Wilson’s best driver yet, and I have to agree that it is certainly the best Wilson driver that I have seen.
Cobra and Mizuno took the title of best “underdog” drivers. However, I think the Wilson D9 might be the next leader for the category in 2021 because of its attractive price, smart look, simple performance, and appealing price.
Who Is It Aimed At?
Wilson’s D Range was originally aimed at handicappers of higher handicap who had trouble striking it consistent. Wilson drivers are very lightweight, and irons clearly fall under the category of ‘game-improvement.
Wilson seems to be shifting the emphasis of this D9 range towards the middle. It’s possible that you could see a single-figure golfer use the driver, just like a beginner or high handicapper.
The investment made into the new technology means that this driver now looks and performs like a premium driver which can compete to the big boys, and if it went head to head with the likes of the TaylorMade SIM2 Max Ping G425 Callaway Epic Speed I’d be confident that it would hold it’s own.
Could I Use It
Performance
After experiencing what seemed like an enormous sweet spot, I was not surprised to see consistent data from my launch monitor. High ball speeds and tight landing groups resulted in high ball speeds. Low spin combined with the launch angle of 9deg loft had a significant impact on my carry. There were no complaints regarding the roll-out, particularly when the ball was going straight down fairway.
Wilson engineers developed a computer program that simulates thousands of facial geometries to increase the D9 driver’s distance and forgiveness performance. Wilson designed what they called “fractal Zones”, each of them tuned for explosive speed.
You may have also seen the fixed hosel. Adjustability can be a great feature, but if you’re happy with the performance of your stock D9 it is fine. A similar point can be made about shafts. Flex is the only choice.

The Kevlar(r) three-layer composite crown was how Wilson was able to dampen vibrations, improve the acoustics and increase the feel of their new D9 driver. Wilson was able to create and test several composite prototypes using computer modeling software to determine the best build for ball speed.
Because the carbon fiber is used in the mid-composite layer, it makes the driver extremely light. Having a lightweight driver is important as it helps lower the center of gravity on the driver’s face, also known as COG.
Golfers who have a slower ball speed can hit the ball further and higher with a lower COG. Low center of gravity means a driver that hits the ball more accurately and has a neutral flight.

Are The Wilson D9 Drivers Any Good?
The Wilson Staff D9 driver offers excellent forgiveness and assistance with launch. While the spin is great for keeping the ball high in the air and reducing carry distance, some may find it difficult to maintain the ball’s flight. The PS299 offers a great deal. This driver is very accommodating and can get the ball in the air with ease.
Wilson D9 and D7 are better?
D9 irons are a degree harder than D7. However, Wilson said shots would fly higher thanks to lowering the centre of gravity height. (To create Wilson’s lowest ever CGiron), Wilson stated that shots will have a flatter landing angle which makes it easier for shots to be held from a distance.
